Nerja, the eastern most town of the region of the Axarquía, known in Moorish times as Naricha, meaning rich in water, is 50 Kms. from Málaga on the border with the province of Granada and situated between the sisters villages of Torrox and Frigiliana. Nerja hangs over a chasm of sparkling blue waters - the sea. Behind it lies the mountain range of the "Sierra Almijara" with La Navicha and la Cuesta del Cielo, embracing the town with its horseshoe shape. Shielded by the sea and the mountains, Nerja has become the Oasis of Europe and the preference for visitors throughout the year

For certain, Nerja is ideally suited for any visitor. Its climate and unique geographical map are conducive to the relaxation and enjoyment of everyone. Both the sea and the mountains are in complete harmony with each other. Sierra Nevada's mountain known as "Navachica" stands at an impressive 1.832 m. There are numerous riverbeds and country lanes where you can find beautiful views, streams, rivers and tracks where time and nature stand still. Even the most demanding adventurers finds these corners both enchanting and fascinating; undoubtedly a paradise for the lovers of nature. Many country tracks follow the river beds, some high and rocky such as the popular route known as la Ruta del Río Chillar and others flat and easy such as la Ruta del Fuente del Esparto and the Barranco de la Coladilla which overlooks a glorious valley densely populated with pine trees, holm-oaks, shrubs, palm trees and junipers. The significant silence of this very special area is only rarely broken, by the numerous species of birds that inhabit it. However further on, visitors and serious excursionists can find designated rest areas fully equipped with bar-b-q`s, toilets and camping sites. Mountain goats are a familiar site to anyone who has visited this enchanting place before and it is no surprise to see them gathering at the foot of the botanical gardens situated at the entrance to Fuente Del Esparto.

Route of Río de la Miel: In the fertile valley of the most eastern part of the Sierra, covering gentle hills and slopes, this route takes you through years of traditional cultivation, olives, almonds and figs. It's greenery provides a startling contrast to other more typical areas of this mountainous region. You will find small cascading waterfalls and near the rivers, lush vegetation, the natural habitat of the fresh water tortoise. From the top of the Peñon de los Castillejos, you can contemplate the stunning views of the valley of Río de La Miél, Granada, and its coastline.

Found to the left of the main Nerja - Almería highway is the picturesque Acueducto del Aguila (The Eagle Aqueduct), built in the latter half of XIX century, to divert water to the village of Maro. Its eagle namesake is perfectly preserved in the center of the monument. The tower of Maro is one of many similar towers overlooking the coastline. From here there are incredible views and you can enjoy a pleasant walk amongst natural aromatic plants such as Thyme and Rosemary. In the beautiful village of Maro, just 4 Kms. from Nerja, one can find the impressive Caves of Nerja. Called the natural cathedral of the Costa Del sol, this monument is one of the jewels of the coast, formed by natural calcifications and underground rivers dating back 5 million years. The mouth of the cave is situated 1 Km. from the coast and 158 m. above sea level. The interior of these beautiful caves boast a number of halls within which have been found wall paintings dating back thousands of years to the times of out ancestors. There is a permanent exhibition of valuable archaeological pieces which have been found during the continuing excavations. The caves are one of the few sites for the study of geological formation in Andalusia. The Caves of Nerja , considered to be the most important monument in the region of the Axarquía, are also a feature of Europe's artistic patrimony. Nerja, (originally named Narixa, meaning rich in water), has many legends and stories that have been passed by word of mouth across the centuries, stemming from romance between the sun, the moon and the sea.
		The Acantilados de Maro are situated where the slopes of the Sierra Almijara meet the Mediterranean sea and form an area of outstanding beauty. Also worth visiting is a 375 hectare greenbelt which has been declared a natural park. Great care and dedication has been given to preserve all these green areas in their natural state.

	The sea has always been and still remains the soul of the town. Thousands of visitors have chosen Nerja as their idyll. They do so because of clean, sandy beaches, the charisma of the people, the gentle way of life and traditionally rich andalusian culture. Nerja's beaches, El Playazo, La Torrecilla, El Salon, Calahonda, El Chorillo, and Burriana, cover 16 Kms. of fine sand and clear waters. Nerja's privileged geographical position provides the perfect combination for aquatic and sub-aquatic activities, and gives close proximity for one of the most prestigious winter sports resorts in Europe. The Sierra Nevada ski station hosted the 1996 World Alpine Ski Championships. A must for any visitor to the Costa del Sol is an IX century fortification crowned as the "Balcony of Europe". This scenic promenade adorned with palm trees and exotic plants provides an exceptional view of the Mediterranean coastline. Protected and sheltered by the surrounding mountains, Nerja enjoys a sub-tropical climate with an average summer temperature in excess of 25º and a winter time temperature of 15º. This special climate is ideal for the cultivation of many sub-tropical and out of season fruits; mango, custard apple, avocado, papaya etc. Agriculture is the fundamental pillar of Nerja's economy along with fishing and tourism. The people of Nerja, called "Nerjeños", are traditionally open, free spirited and proud. Their obvious love for life and good living is as much their way of life as the sea itself. 	Nerja is, in itself the future. It is due to the collaboration and combined efforts of the townspeople that the future of Nerja is so clearly defined; the characteristics and individuality of the town will be maintained whilst keeping in line with the progress and development of the area. This department processes data relevant to the local tourist industry in order that any deficiency can be located and improved.
